🕐 Skim daily, vacuum weekly

Surface debris builds quickly in Ontario summers. Skimming daily and vacuuming once a week keeps your filter from working overtime and your water looking pristine.

🔬 Shock after heavy use

After a pool party or heavy rain, shock your pool to restore chlorine levels. This prevents combined chlorine (chloramines) from building up and causing that "chlorine smell."

🌀 Run your pump 8–12 hours/day

Proper circulation is essential. Running your pump for 8–12 hours a day ensures all pool water cycles through your filter at least once, preventing stagnation.

🧽 Brush walls weekly

Algae and calcium deposits cling to pool walls and floors. Brushing at least once a week — especially in corners and on steps — prevents buildup before it becomes visible.

Water Care

Balanced water protects your liner, equipment, and swimmers. These are the numbers every pool owner should track.

🎯 Target pH: 7.2 – 7.6

This is the most important number. Too low and water irritates eyes and skin; too high and chlorine becomes ineffective. Test twice a week during peak season.

📏 Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm

Alkalinity acts as a pH buffer, preventing rapid swings. Adjust alkalinity before pH when balancing — it makes everything else easier to dial in.

🪨 Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm

Low calcium causes water to leach minerals from your liner and equipment. High calcium leads to scale deposits. Ontario's tap water varies — always test at the start of the season.

☀️ Free Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm

Chlorine is your primary sanitizer. Sunlight burns it off quickly — consider a stabilizer (cyanuric acid) outdoors. Aim to test free chlorine levels at least 3 times per week.

🔎 Inspect equipment monthly

Look for cracks, leaks, or corrosion on your pump, filter, heater, and chlorinator. Catching a small drip early costs far less than emergency repairs mid-summer.

🧽 Backwash your sand filter

When pressure rises 8–10 PSI above normal operating pressure, it's time to backwash. Over-backwashing wastes water; under-backwashing reduces filtration efficiency.

🔋 Clean pump strainer baskets weekly

A clogged strainer basket forces your pump to work harder, shortening its life. Check and empty it every week — more often after heavy rain or wind.

❄️ Winterize properly

Ontario winters are hard on pool equipment. Proper winterization — including blowing out lines, adding antifreeze, and plugging returns — prevents costly freeze damage.

Seasonal Tips

Your pool's needs change with the seasons. Here's your year-round care calendar for Durham and York pools.
